Video: Single-material pet food packaging
The development of new packaging must consider not only cost and market potential but also recyclability—an urgent issue in the pet food industry, where complex multi‑layer plastics are standard but difficult to recycle. With global plastic recycling rates at only 9%, Adimax and Plastrela partnered with ExxonMobil Signature Polymers to redesign pet food packaging using a monomaterial solution. Despite challenges in maintaining stiffness, thermal resistance, and sealing performance, the teams collaborated for months, adjusting formulations and processes to create a five‑layer polyethylene structure that delivers strength, protection, clarity, and sealing—all within a design for recyclability. The final product matches the look and performance of traditional packaging without compromising shelf life or consumer experience. This joint effort demonstrates how innovation and partnership can turn a sustainability challenge into a practical, market-ready solution for expanding packaging recyclability in Brazil.
