benzene alkylation

Ethylbenzene Licensing Technology

ExxonMobil’s innovation in ethylbenzene catalyst process research is at the heart of two benzene products available for license through TechnipFMC Badger Process Technology.

The relationship with TechnipFMC Badger Process Technology has enabled:

  • The first commercial process for producing ethylbenzene based on the proprietary ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst (1970s)
  • The first high-purity, liquid-phase processes for producing ethylbenzene and cumene based on proprietary catalysts, the ExxonMobil/Badger EBMaxSM

Benzene alkylation is a vital process in the chemical industry, underpinning the production of essential chemicals like ethylbenzene. With ongoing technological advancements and a strong market demand, the future of benzene alkylation looks promising. Licensing plays a critical role in disseminating cutting-edge technologies, ensuring that the industry continues to innovate and meet global needs.

Below is a simplified process flow diagram for production of ethylbenzene and cumene using our proprietary EBMax technology and services:

Our process

Our applications

  • Ethylbenzene alkylation (EBMax℠)

The EBMax™ process dramatically lowers operating temperatures, reduces equipment sizes and energy consumption, and improves ethylbenzene product quality.

  • Cumene alkylation (Cumene)

ExxonMobil zeolite catalysts enable a simple, liquid-phase process that sets the standard for cumene product purity.
