Santoprene™ TPV integrated system solutions for glass run channel weather seals

  • Santoprene™ High Resilience (HR) TPV, providing enhanced resilience and elastic recovery comparable to that of EPDM; and
  • Santoprene™ R² TPV, made with at least 15% and up to 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material, offering greater potential for sustainable design solutions
When combined together, Santoprene™ High Resilience TPV and Santoprene™ R² TPV prove to be high performance on static, semi-dynamic and dynamic applications, while lowering the total system cost, further contributing to the customer’s circular economy model.

  • Any Santoprene™ TPV scrap generated during weatherseal manufacturing can be melted and remolded, leading to waste reduction. What’s more, when a vehicle reaches its end-of-life, components made with Santoprene™ TPV can potentially be recovered and recycled further contributing to the customer’s circular economy model.

The simplified manufacturing process of Santoprene™ TPV, together with its recyclability, offers a real opportunity for a recycling stream for both post-industrial and post-consumer models. How to reduce weight?

Enable the automotive industry to lower CO2 emissions

When it comes to taking action towards the environmental footprint in the automotive industry, weight matters.

Frame-under-glass GRCs are typically made with a metal frame and EPDM (ethylene propylene diene polymethylene backbone) rubber, which is heavy and difficult to recycle. Adjusting the frame design to a lighter, more flexible option provides an opportunity for manufacturers to design models that are lower in weight, potentially increasing energy efficiency and lowering their CO2 emissions.

Choosing Santoprene™ TPV can lead to up to 55% lighter weight and a more flexible design manufacture. Why?

  • Santoprene™ TPV is on average 20% less dense than regular EPDM rubber;
  • Santoprene™ TPV’s design flexibility carries the potential for up to 35% weight reduction compared to the regular EPDM rubber via thinner walls enabling GRC systems to require less material to deliver similar end-use properties;
  • Santoprene™ TPV allows manufacturers to replace the metallic part of the clamping and flocking systems with polypropylene - a much lighter choice than metal - adding another 20% in weight savings to the list.

Santoprene™ R² TPV, made with at least 15% and up to 30% PCR material, can help improve its life cycle impact compared to regular Santoprene™ TPV, while offering an optimized balance of performance and cost-effectiveness for the foot element of the GRC.

Santoprene™ components, as well as any TPV scrap generated during weatherseal manufacturing can be melted, re-extruded and remolded, considerably reducing the amount of production waste.
