Vistamaxx™ propylene-based elastomers enhance sealing performance in BOPP films


Vistamaxx propylene-based elastomers allow designers of coextruded biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film structures to modify the formulation for the sealant layer polymer to enhance seal integrity while significantly lowering the seal initiation temperature (SIT).

When blended with a standard PP or with a random copolymer for a lower-cost option, Vistamaxx allows improvement of the seal hermeticity of conventional films by up to 25%, while also permitting improved hot tack. These two properties are critical when the film is used in high-speed vertical form fill and seal (VFFS) packaging lines for products such as such as crisps, snacks, biscuits and bakery products.

The lower SIT enabled by Vistamaxx permits the design of cost-effective broad and very broad sealing range (VBSR) films. When used in horizontal form fill and seal (HFFS) packaging lines, these films allow very high packaging speed and a wide processing window. They are ideal for single-portion snack cakes, crackers and chocolates, and for temperature-sensitive foods such as snacks and ice cream.
