Monohydric alcohol esters are used to plasticize PVC (polyvinyl chloride).

1940
The flexible PVC market begins to grow.

1948
Exxon Chemical's oxo process for continuous alcohol production is commercialized at the Baton Rouge plant, initially manufacturing isooctyl alcohol.

Alcohols are sold to plasticizer producers for the first time.
