| | ExxonMobil Chemical Introduces New Labeling and Flexible packaging OPP Film Products & Technologies at Packaging Expo
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, USA – ExxonMobil Chemical Company pushes the boundaries of
oriented polypropylene (OPP) film performance at Pack Expo 2004.
The world’s premier provider of specialty films for flexible packaging and
labeling will highlight two new OPP films with ultrahigh barrier and enhanced
sealant technology at booth (N 3351). In addition, ExxonMobil will showcase
recent film developments for labeling technologies with critical growth in the
use of synthetics including cold-glue and in-mold technologies.
“ExxonMobil continues to invest significantly in new technologies and product
development to bring our customers new packaging solutions,” said Jim Ashmore,
Sales and Marketing Manager for the Films Business, Americas. “At Pack Expo,
we’re showing several films with advancements that open up new markets to the
benefits of OPP film.”
Ultra-high Barrier, Enhanced Seal Films
Featuring exceptional barrier properties combined with enhanced sealant
technology, two new films from ExxonMobil help users simplify previously
complicated package designs by replacing multi-web structures.
Metallyte X-28 UBW-ES is a multi-layer, cavitated white OPP film that was
designed specifically to replace foil and a sealant web by combining the
properties of each into one film. It is metallized on one side with a
proprietary sealant layer on the other. This film provides improved barrier to
flex cracking over foil. It features an enhanced sealant to provide leak-free
seals and allow sealing through contamination of dry food and mix particles.
The film has an exceptional barrier to gases, flavors, moisture and light and
features a brilliant foil appearance.
Metallyte® X-28 UCW-ES is a multi-layer, cavitated, white OPP film with an
enhanced sealant to provide leak-free seals and allow sealing through
contamination. The film combines the properties of metalized polyester and
polyethelene, creating a mono-web packaging solution. This film can be surface
printed and overlaquered, has an exceptional barrier to gases, flavors and
moisture and was designed specifically for fractional pack coffee
applications. Metallyte UCW-ES will also be offered in a 40 micron gauge.
Cold Glue Cut & Stack
In 2001, ExxonMobil launched Label-Lyte 85 LP, a drop-in replacement film for
paper in water-based, cold-glue, cut and stack labeling applications. The
success of Label-Lyte 85 LP drove ExxonMobil to launch two new films, both on
display at Labelexpo 2004. Label-Lyte 90 LP and Label-Lyte 95 LP both feature
surfaces compatible with the offset litho printing process. Label-Lyte 90 LP
features a high sheen metal surface and Label-Lyte 95 LP offers a glossy,
white appearance.
ExxonMobil’s Label-Lyte LP films boast excellent moisture resistance and
durability, passing 24, 48 and 72 hour ice chest testing resolving problems
from curl, flagging, tearing and wrinkling that paper labels experience.
Label-Lyte LP films reduce glue usage up to 50 percent versus paper labels.
And, during trials on commercial bottling equipment, these films create a
significant cost savings for the bottler.
In-Mold
ExxonMobil completes its booth by featuring two new films for the growing
in-mold labeling market. Label-Lyte 65 LIM 301 and Label-Lyte 95 LBM 301
debuted at Label Expo 2004. These films combine cost and converting benefits
for printers with strong visual appeal characteristics for the end user.
In-mold labeling continues to gain popularity due to the appeal of a
"no-label" look with retailers and the elimination of investment in labeling
equipment and label application by the end user.
Used in injection molding applications such as margarine, stadium cups, yogurt
and deli salad tubs, Label-Lyte 65 LIM 301 provides a smooth and glossy
finish after molding. The film also offers good printability, with a print
skin designed for litho and solvent gravure and flexo printing, together with
excellent die-cutting. The mold ready side provides excellent adhesion to the
container and compatibility with the container makes recycling easy.
Label-Lyte 95 LBM 301, a developmental film for blow-molded containers, is
mold ready – no adhesive required. Designed for blow-molded containers used in
liquid laundry, household chemical, food and auto applications, this film
satisfies the high demands for blow-mold film label converting and application
at affordable economics.
“For over 30 years, ExxonMobil Chemical Company has been bringing new and
proven packaging solutions to the industry and this year is no different,”
said Ashmore. “We appreciate the opportunity that Pack Expo gives us to let
our customers know they can continue to turn to us for innovative solutions to
their packaging needs now and in the future.”
