The market
The high growth of the bottled water market has gone hand in hand with market segmentation. Today’s consumer can choose from among a huge variety of products including still waters, sparkling waters, flavoured and health waters. Product packaging, and labelling in particular, helps in sustaining demand by emphasising product differentiation.
Packaging & Labelling characteristics Mineral water is mainly packed in PET or glass bottles and paper is the major substrate used for labelling.
| PET bottles usually use hot-melt wrap-around pre-cut labels, printed via sheet-fed offset. For glass bottles, various shaped pre-cut labels are mostly applied in patch form with water-based glue. Following the example of the carbonated soft drink market more than 10 years ago, there is a trend in the Mineral Water market to replace paper labels with OPP, as well as move to use more rell-fed labels. The main advantages of OPP labels are their high gloss, modern appearance optimising shelf impact and their resistance to tearing, moisture and mould. Additionally they can easily be separated from the bottle for recycling. Depending on marketing needs and film choice, OPP can provide excellent transparency or very high opacity. Finally, OPP’s stiffness and mechanical strength and consitency provide good production efficiencies and economics. Labelling technologies ExxonMobil has a multitude of labelling solutions in its Label-Lyte™ range:
- For Cut & stack wrap-around labels, Lithor™ films, with their anti-static properties, can run on existing cut & stack machines. With films in the range providing high gloss white, matt white and clear appearance for the "no-label" look, our Lithor™ films can help convey the message your marketing department wants.
- For Reel-fed Wrap-around , a complete range of clear, white and metallised Label-Lyte™ films are available.
- The ROSO™ film is designed for contoured shapes. The film can be used on existing reel-fed machines, with an in-line shrink tunnel added.
