Applications
Labelling: Carbonated Soft Drinks

Listed below are some of our films that have been used in typical packaging applications in different markets. Every application is different and the use of any packaging product should be rigorously tested before being used commercially. (See guidelines below.)

The market

Soft drinks have enjoyed tremendous growth in Western Europe over the past few years. Some 80 billion litres are consumed each year and the market continues to grow. Some 15% of supermarket shelf space is now taken up by soft drinks.
Carbonated soft drinks (CSD) represent 35% of this market (other segments are water, juices, mixed drinks and still beverages). In the last 5 years, the EU market grew by 12%, while in other European countries it grew by more than 20%.

Packaging & Labelling characteristics

PET bottles are the most common containers for cabonated soft drinks, although glass bottles and cans still dominate small size 25cl and 33cl units. In most of Europe, non-refillable PET bottles are used for their good economics combined with excellent appearance and design flexibility. Refillable PET bottles dominate in some countries, especially in Scandinavia.

Paper was the traditional material used for CSD labelling and it still dominates in glass and refillable PET bottles. Non-refillable bottles now mostly use OPP wrap-around labels.
The CSD market was one of the first to use OPP film as a major label substrate. The films are generally chosen for their excellent appearance and resistance to moisture and mechanical damage. This ensures that the product looks as good on the supermarket shelf as when it leaves the factory.
OPP is also an ideal substrate where PET bottles are recycled. Its low density and high stretch resistance ensure clean separation of the PET and OPP flakes after the grinding process, so that the recovered PET resin can be used again.

Labelling technologies

Many different labelling technologies are used for labelling in this segment in which ExxonMobil can offer the expertise and solution:
  • For Reel-fed wrap-around labelling, clear, white and metallised films are available in different gaugesto optimise the performance and stiffness of the label.
  • For Shaped bottles or cans, ROSO™ (Roll-On-Shrink-On) films are designed for use on reel-fed, wrap around labelling machines with a shrink tunnel.
  • For Cut & stack wrap- around labelling, our range of Lithor™ anti-static films are suitable for machines originally designed to run paper labels. Films are available in white gloss or white matt and in clear versions. There is no need to change the labelling machine
  • For Self-adhesive labels, we have developed a variety of white and clear Label-Lyte™ films for self-adhesive applications.
