Oppack Awards 2004 Winners Demonstrate Originality, Consumer Appeal and Quality

January 31st 2005: The OPPack Awards external judging session was held in the regional headquarters of ExxonMobil Chemical Films Europe in Luxembourg on January 14th 2005.  The independent expert jury decision demonstrated a keenness for original packaging, executed with highest quality standards and with a strong leaning towards consumer appeal.

The jury comprised five experts within the packaging industry: Mrs Aude Giabicani, Senior Production Manager, Team Créatif Design Agency, based in France; Mr Alexander Boiko, from the Russian Federation of Commerce and Industry; Mr Edgard Schroyens, International Packaging Consultant based in the Netherlands; Dr Sergio Visona, Packaging Consultant for Conpack, based in Italy; Mr Pierre Hamelink, Worldwide Product Manager, Bosch, based in the Netherlands.

The jury selected a winner and two runners up in the category "Flexible Packaging Applications" and a winner and two runners up in the category "Labelling Applications".

The pack selected by the jury for the Gold Flexible Packaging OPPack Award was Christian Dior J'adore perfume box overwrap packaging using 20µ Bicor™ MB 666 laminate with reverse printing.  The application comes from France, enduser Parfums Christian Dior, converter SPO.  The jury selected the pack because of the outstanding print quality on the glossy OPP film, which protects the printing against abrasion and gives added value to the package.  The jury also commented that the laminate provides excellent tamper protection for the luxury product at point of sale.

The pack selected by the jury for the Silver Flexible Packaging OPPack Award was Fornarelli Bread Sticks from Italy wrapped in 20µ Bicor MB 400 laminated to 36µ OPPalyte™ MO 747.  Enduser Grissin Bon and converter SIT.  The jury chose the pack because the attention of the consumer is immediately drawn by the play between the matt lacquer and the glossy look and feel of the packaging film, as well as the high quality printing and outstanding design.  They also noted that the film performs very well on the packaging machine.

The pack selected by the jury for the Bronze Flexible Packaging OPPack Award was ION chocolate pralines from Greece from enduser ION and converter Typochrom wrapped in 38µ Metallyte™ MW280.
The jury commented that the packaging was innovative and well processed with excellent print quality and pack design, which is in perfect harmony with the product.   They also praised the environmental aspects, highlighting the fact that the packaging needs less material so reduces pack weight.

The pack selected by the jury for the Gold Labelling OPPack Award was Arwa labelled in 35µ Label-Lyte™ LL666 reel fed wrap around label film.  The mineral water bottle application comes from the United Arab Emirates, enduser Al Ahlia Gulf Line General Trading Co. (Coca Cola Bottling UAE) and the material is converted by Pacman Middle East.
The jury remarked that the purity and quality of the product is reflected through the packaging.  The Label-Lyte film offers stiffness and easy machinability on the labelling machine as well as very good flexographic print quality.  They highlighted the economic and efficient use of label material, since the area used for labelling is restricted without neglecting the marketing function of the label.

The pack selected by the jury for the Silver Labelling OPPack Award was Viva La Prugna labelled in 65µ Label-Lyte Lithor LT447 in mould label film.  This in mould (IML) application for tubs of dried fruit comes from Italy.  The enduser is Noberasco, the in-mould labeller is Syra and the printer is GPS/Rotomec.
The jury remarked that the product was highly appealing, thanks to excellent printing and an attractive design, with the moulding and labelling in the same process, giving the chosen film a very smooth appearance and feel.  They felt that the pack was also worthy of praise because it demonstrated a new kind of packaging for this kind of product.

The pack selected by the jury for the Bronze Labelling OPPack Award was Elch Pro Universal Repair Coatings, an IML tub application from the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium labelled in 65µ Label-Lyte Lithor LT447 in mould label film. The enduser is Rhodia Sealants, the in-mould labeller is Saier Verpackungstechnik and the printer is Drukkerij Verstraete.
The jury praised the application for being a new step in communicating the marketing message to the consumer, with good quality printing, enabled by the in-mould label process.  They felt that the product set a new high standard of 'Do-It-Yourself' product packaging.
