New Metallyte Films Offer Ultra-High-Barrier Alternatives To Aluminium

Two new films in ExxonMobil’s Metallyte range of ultra-high-barrier metallised films have joined 35µ OPPalyte MU842 as highly attractive alternatives to aluminium foil in the construction of high barrier laminates. These transparent, biaxially-oriented, multi-layer films are designed to be used in laminated packaging for sensitive dry products such as baby milk powder, cereals, dry mixes, dehydrated food and coffee, as well as for sensitive biscuits, confectionery and snacks.

A major advantage of these specific Metallyte films, compared to metallised polyester or aluminium foil, is their exceptional performance after flexing and their better puncture resistance, both of which contribute to better product protection and shelf life.
Both films have an optical density of 2.8, a WVTR of 0.3 (38°C, 90%RH) and an OTR of 0.15 (23°C, 0% RH).
Metallyte 18XM882 is untreated on its polyethylene compatible sealable surface (non-metallised side) and can be used in two possible structures:
  •  XM882/PE sealant used in an unprinted 2-layer lamination for bag-in-box applications as an alternative to OPP/alu/PE, Pet/alu/PE, Pet-met/PE.

The structure fits well with the industry trend for downgauging and use of mono materials and allows both lap and gusset sealing (the latter because Metallyte XM882 can also be sealed to itself). This enables brand owners to create stand-up formats, with reduced surface area compared to alternative structures (e.g. PET/alufoil/PE), while providing VFFS performance due to well-controlled outer slip (COF).
The structure provides an excellent solution for long conservation of products packed under modified atmosphere with little oxygen uptake in the pack headspace.
  •  Paper/PE/ XM882/PE sealant: Metallyte XM882 has been specially designed to be receptive to extrusion lamination and coating, without compromising barrier properties or appearance. Moreover, the PE extrusion coating can be applied directly to the film’s non-metal side without using primers.  In regions of high humidity, this technology can be used to develop. cost effective all-plastic high-performance barrier laminates (PET or OPP/PE/XM882/PE)

Metallyte 18XM883 is treated on its PE sealant side and can be used in various structures:
  •  Ink/Paper/XM883/PE sealant: achieved via adhesive lamination for pouch packaging in the dry food market, the presence of paper helps give the structure good stiffness as well as a more traditional look and feel.

  •  Pet or OPP (MB 440)/XM883/PE sealant: designed for use in a wide range of applications for biscuits, wafers, dry powders and dry beverages, the structure meets the needs of products packed in soft and vacuum packs. For products packed under atmospheric conditions, Metallyte 18XM883 plays an essential role in limiting the impact of moisture uptake and providing aroma and light protection.

  •  OPP-Print/XM883/Cold seal: a solution for HFFS applications for sensitive confectionery bars and wafers, with outstanding converting properties.

  •  Print-XM 883/PE sealant: designed for VFFS applications with fin seals for biscuits, dry fruits, snacks, etc.  The structure provides good economics; efficient lamination and barrier stability, good puncture resistance and perfect ink adhesion on the Metallyte film’s treated side.
