| | Listed below are some of our films that have been used in typical packaging applications in different markets. Every application is different and the use of any packaging product should be rigorously tested before being used commercially (see guidelines).
The market
Today, pet foods (dog & cat) represent the second most important revenue stream in the grocery business of hypermarkets. It falls just behind that of sweet biscuits, but far ahead of that from coffee or chocolate bars. The European market for flexible packaging for pet food is around 20,000 tons, with an average growth rate of 5% per year. The market is split into two major segments, dry food and wet food. The first is the largest growth sector and highly competitive, with the major players attempting to gain overall cost leadership, to increase product differentiation and to defend their position. ExxonMobil has an in-depth understanding of the key-factors influencing the quality and the shelf life of these products. Our objective is to continue developing new films which offer better product protection, performance and promotional opportunities in response to market needs. Main factors of degradation
All pet foods need protection, to a greater or lesser extent, against the factors below:
- Humidity
Moisture loss will create product staling and subsequent off-odour & off-taste; moisture gain will generate loss of crispiness. In both cases, the pet will reject the food and the product is unlieky to be bought again!
- Oxygen
Fat concentration is around 30-35% even in dry pet foods. Oxidation of the fat will generate a bad taste and will increase the possibility of mould growth. A degradation of the nutritional components will also occur.
- Light
Light also acts as a catalyst in the oxidation reaction.
- Aroma barrier
An aroma barrier is needed to preserve the aroma of strong products, as well as to avoid contamination of products displayed close by.
- Tight seals
Tight packaging seals are required for gas flush applications. ExxonMobil solutions
