Applications
Packaging: Frozen Food

Listed below are some of our films that have been used in typical packaging applications in different markets. Every application is different and the use of any packaging product should be rigorously tested before being used commercially. (See guidelines below.)

The market

New product development is widespread in the frozen foods market. A common trend in all market sectors, from starters to desserts, is to support the launch of a new product with more sophisticated packaging that enhances brand promotion and delivers superior product protection. In the ice cream market, demand has become less seasonal, a trend encouraged by brand extensions and growth of the "take-home" sector.
Polypropylene films are increasingly becoming the packaging material of choice in this market. ExxonMobil is well represented in all sectors, with a range of films that enhance the promotional, convenience and performance aspects of frozen food products.

Product types

Main factors of degradation

While freezing reduces the numbers of viable organisms, it does not completely sterilise food. To maintain frozen foods in perfect condition during storage and distribution, the packaging must provide protection against:
  • Dehydration caused by moisture vapour escaping through the walls or seals of the package. This moisture loss dehydrates the surface area of the food, causing desiccation or freezer burn
  • If air penetrates the package, oxidation, promoted by enzymes which have not been eliminated by blanching, can be caused
  • Light accelerates oxidation particularly in foods with a high fat content
  • Flavour or odour loss

ExxonMobil solutions: ice cream
Ice cream, a blend of milk, cream and sugar frozen to give a desirabl texture, is probably one of the world's most popular food products. The market has enjoyed one of the fastest growths in recent years. Development of super premium and premium market segments has led to higher-value product presentation and protection, with polypropylene becoming the packaging material of choice.
