Applications
Labelling: Dairy Products

Listed below are some of our films that have been used in typical packaging applications in different markets. Every application is different and the use of any packaging product should be rigorously tested before being used commercially. (See guidelines below.)

The market

Milk and its liquid by-products are often seen as commodities in a market characterised by strong competition. Producers are therefore making significant efforts to come up with new added-value products. Drinkable yoghurts, probiotic milks, and other functional milks enriched with vitamins, minerals, fibres or Omega-3 fatty acids, have spread rapidly through the market. These new products are often supported by different types of packaging to set them apart at point of purchase.

Packaging & labelling characteristics

The traditional returnable glass bottle, although still present in the market, has mostly given way to aseptic brick cartons and HDPE (high-density polyethylene) bottles. HDPE is mainly used for milk and drinkable yoghurts. It can be natural, offering a translucent appearance, or pigmented, often white, for additional UV protection. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are also making inroads into the market. PET brings glass-like transparency, a relatively high gas barrier and stiffness to create container designs that cannot be achieved with HDPE.
The dominant labelling substrate for these bottles is still paper, but the trend is towards plastic labels, particularly OPP. OPP's main advantages are a modern, high gloss appearance for optimised shelf impact and good resistance to moisture, tear and mould. Its stiffness and mechanical strength provide good production economics and it offers excellent recycling opportunities with both HDPE and PET bottles.

Labelling technologies

There are several Labelling technologies widely used in liquid dairy products :
  • For Cut & stack wrap-around labels, Label-Lyte Lithor™ films can easily replace paper labels on existing labelling machinery. The OPP films are anti-static and designed for optimised performance. Their high gloss makes paper labels look dull in comparison. Should you require a matt white or transparent label, we also have a solution.
  • For Reel-fed wrap-around labels, we offer a complete range of white, clear and metallised solutions. Wrap- around labels provide a 360° billboard, allowing more information to be printed on the label - about your product or other promotional opportunities.
  • The ROSO™ Roll-On-Shrink-On range is designed for Contoured shapes. ROSO™ films can be used on reel-fed machines, with the addition of a shrink tunnel. ROSO™ is popular for drinkable yoghurts and probiotic milk bottles.
  • For Self-adhesive labels, we have a variety of white and clear Label-Lyte films offering excellent performance and a unique label finish for dairy applications.
  • For Wet-glue labelling, ExxonMobil can propose new possibilities with Lithor film for white Labels and a specially designed metallised film.
