Butyl Polymers

Description & Background
History: 1971-1980

1972

EPDM production begins at second ExxonMobil Chemical plant located in Notre Dame de Gravenchon , France.

1973

Development of low-temperature finishing technology for temperature-sensitive elastomers.

1974-78

Thermoplastic Olefins (TPO) defined and commercially developed for major automotive applications markets. Marketed as Vistaflex in Europe.

DVAs (dynamically vulcanized alloys) developed based on cured butyl and EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) blends in polyolefins which processed like a plastic but with rubber-like properties.

1976-80

Invention and development of the market for a new, conjugated diene butyl which exhibited enhanced activity via conjugated diene functionality which resulted in faster cures, easier chemical modification and greater latitude of cure system.
