Butyl Polymers

Description & Background
History: 1951-1960

1953-58

Development of butyl and halobutyl latex, making possible aqueous dispersions of butyl polymers in colloidal systems for tire cord adhesion in the all-butyl tire.

1954

Purchase of the butyl plants at Baytown, Texas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana from the federal government.

1954-61

Development of the technology for an all-butyl tire which was manufactured and marketed by several major tire companies.

Possessed unique traction, cornering and age resistant and energy absorbing properties.

The technical achievement of the all-butyl tire heightened awareness of this polymer's hysteretic properties which impacts on traction and rolling resistance.

1956-61

Development of the technology to produce chlorobutyl.
