Butyl Polymers

Description & Background
History: 1931-1940

1931

Agreement between Standard Oil of New Jersey and I.G. Farben Industrie of Germany that provided ExxonMobil Chemical access to early work on synthetic rubber technology.
  • Provided early association with Friedel Craft catalyzed iso-olefin polymerization technology, e.g., polyisobutylene.
  • Made available all synthetic rubber polymerization technology developed in Germany from 1930 to 1936, e.g., Styrene-Butadiene Rubber and Nitrile-Butadiene Rubber and associated monomer production.
1937

Invention and patenting of butyl rubber by ExxonMobil Chemical.
  • First demonstration of low unsaturation, synthetic rubber which possessed excellent air retention, oxidation and age resistance, as well as high damping properties.
  • Significant contribution to the WWII effort. Provided U.S. with a vital synthetic rubber to help replace natural rubber that had been cut off by the Japanese.
