Butyl Polymers

Applications
Automotive

Butyl polymers' unique combination of barrier properties, high damping, resistance to ozone and heat aging make them ideal for use in many automotive applications. The largest automotive applications for butyl polymers are heat resistant hose and dynamic parts including body mounts.

EXXON Chlorobutyl and EXXON Bromobutyl are used in vibration control applications due to their high damping, fast reversion-resistant cures and excellent aging properties, especially with respect to hot flex fatigue. Compared to butyl, they can also be formulated to have an intermediate level of oil resistance finding use in engine and transmission mounts and automotive exhaust hanger formulations.

Exxpro specialty elastomers combine the low permeability and high damping properties of butyl rubbers with the environmental and aging resistance of EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubbers. Some of the benefits of Exxpro specialty elastomers can be seen in the attached article on "Heat Resistant Engine Mounts" (in progress).

The high heat resistance capabilities of EXXON Chlorobutyl and EXXON Bromobutyl have resulted in their use in steam and hot water hose applications. The fabricated hose consists of a tube that contains the water or steam, a fabric or wire reinforcement and a cover for protection against abrasion and weathering. The low compression set of chlorobutyl compounds and their resistance to attack in a variety of environmental conditions lead to their use in many types of gaskets.

The following ExxonMobil products can be used in Automotive applications:
