The inherent tack, aging resistance and low permeability of butyl-type
polymers account for their use in various adhesive applications. A number of
partially cross-linked butyl rubbers are commercially available. Many of these
are specifically produced for the adhesives and sealants markets. The wide
selection of completely compatible materials in the family of isobutylene
polymers permits the knowledgeable compounder to achieve a wide range of
properties.
Valve cement based on
EXXON Bromobutyl exhibits good adhesion for
EXXON Butyl /
EXXON Chlorobutyl blend inner tube compounds with both NR and butyl-based
procured valves. Chlorobutyl can be used alone or in blends with other
polymers to achieve special properties in contact cement and is well suited
for sealant tapes because of its vulcanization and heat treatment
capabilities, tack, flexibility and heat resistance. Extrudable compounds
possessing these characteristics were developed for use as sealing tapes for
automotive windshields, pre-engineered buildings and double-glazed windows.
The windshield sealing tape offers good adhesion to metal and glass as well as
softness for ease in installation.
Butyl rubber can be used in formulations for adhesive for transparent tape,
hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives, mastic for pipe wrap tape and vinyl
floor tile adhesives. Butyl rubber can also be used for semi-conducting
electrical splicing tape. A rubber splicing tape must be self-fusing; i.e.,
when wrapped upon itself, it must fuse to the underlying layer, forming a
permanent bond. The self-fusing is a result of compounding and eliminates the
need for application of a separate adhesive coat. These compounds have very
high tensile strengths and exhibit some degree of recovery or elasticity.
Electrical splicing tapes based on butyl rubber have moisture resistance,
outstanding aging resistance and good electrical properties.
Polyisobutylene elastomers have long been successfully used in pressure
sensitive adhesives both as primary elastomers and as tackifiers and
modifiers. Chlorobutyl can be used alone or in blends with other polymers to
achieve special properties in pressure sensitive adhesives. The
Exxpro specialty elastomers find use in these and other adhesive
applications by virtue of their excellent thermal stability and active
crosslinking and chemical modification capabilities.
