Technical Information
Household Products: Laundry Prewash

These starting formulas for laundry prewash are water-in-oil emulsions designed for aerosol application. They are effective laundry prewash spotters that perform comparably with a recognized commercial aerosol product in dirt and grease removal on cotton, polyester, and cotton/polyester fabrics.

The two starting formulations provide stain removal performance generally similar to each other and similar to the commercial product. The two starting formulations appeared to be superior removing sebum soil from cotton. The commercial product appeared to be superior removing sebum soil from polyester and may be marginally superior on some other fabric/stain combinations.

These formulas meet the current CARB and USEPA VOC standards of 22% or less for solids and aerosols, if propellant is added, and 5% or less for other forms.

Stain Removal Test Procedure

Conducted by SGS U.S. Testing Company, Inc. per ASTM D-4265 protocol. The stains were applied on each of the three fabrics and were dried overnight at room temperature. After drying, the three different stain removers were applied to the stains. For the commercial product, the contents of the aerosol dispenser were first sprayed into a container and then applied as a liquid per ASTM D-4265. The fabrics were then washed in water, air-dried, and scored for residual staining by a panel of 5 judges. Stain removal was evaluated according to the following rating scale:

1 = None or very little soil removal
2 = Approximately 25% soil removal
3 = Approximately 50% soil removal
4 = Approximately 75% soil removal
5 = Complete soil removal

Reported values for Formula A, Formula B, and the commercial product in the table are the average score from three replicated tests. Values for the water wash controls are based on a single test. Each individual test score is the average of the scores from the 5 judges. The differences among data needed to be statistically significant at the 95% confidence level are based on the pooled variances calculated from all replicate tests for each stain.
