Chewing Gum

Butyl polymer has been commercially used for many years in the production of chewing gum. EXXON Butyl offers a number of advantages for use in chewing gum because of its inherent properties:

  • Due to low permeability, flavor is retained longer than with natural, gum-based products. Also, transmission of air and water are minimized.
  • Good low temperature flexibility prevents it from becoming brittle and shattering even in heavily-filled compounds.
  • Very low levels of additives are present due to the polymer's heat stability (see product specification sheets).
  • Outstanding stability and resistance to aging prevent degrading during processing under heat and shear.
  • Serves as a hydrophobic plasticizer, providing softness and smoothness for chewing.
  • Offers an excellent base for stick gum where retention of the soft texture during shelf storage is required.
