Santoprene™ TPVs for automotive weatherseals

Santoprene thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) are high-performance elastomers used by automotive designers, engineers, material specifiers and procurement professionals to lower system costs, reduce weight, enhance performance and increase recyclability. They combine the best characteristics of vulcanized rubber – such as flexibility and low compression set – with the processing ease of plastics.

Santoprene TPV can easily be processed on standard thermoplastic equipment. Clean scrap can be reprocessed.

Whether it’s a dynamic or static automotive weathersealing application, Santoprene TPVs offer features and benefits that include:

Sealing performance
Excellent seal retention over time provides durability.

Excellent UV and ozone resistance
Good aesthetic appearance for the life of the part with no bloom.

Good adhesion to PP or TPO
Design flexibility and parts integration is enhanced for easier assembly and system functionality.

Low specific gravity
Lower part weight compared to thermoset rubber and PVC can translate into improved fuel economy.

Processing ease and flexibility
Reduced parts costs can be achieved because:

  • 2K processing is cost-effective compared with assembled seals.
  • Faster cycle times than thermoset rubber reduce energy consumption.
  • Tight tolerances on molded parts reduce or eliminate secondary trimming operations.

In-process scrap can be ground for reuse; end-of-life parts can be recycled alone or with other polyolefins for less product in landfills.
