Synthetic lubricant basestocks

Spray

Formulators use our synthetic basestocks to produce engine oils, transmission fluids, industrial oils, greases and other lubricants that can outperform mineral-based oils in ways that are important to sustainability.

Typically, lubricants made with synthetic basestocks feature:

  • a longer service life
  • improved wear protection
  • reduced deposit formation
  • lower fuel consumption.

Following are some ways that synthetic lubricants promote sustainability:

  • They enable reduced fuel consumption by lowering fluid frictional resistance between moving parts in engines and gears.
  • Automotive engines tend to run cleaner with synthetic lubricants, allowing sensors and emission control systems to run more efficiently.
  • Optimal use and protection of equipment through longer fluid life results in extended uptime and reduces maintenance costs.
  • Industrial customers who use synthetic-based greases in electric motor bearings and gearboxes report a reduction in energy use.
  • Synthetic ester-based fluids are more biodegradable than mineral oils. Biodegradable fluids minimize the environmental impact through normal use or in the case of accidental lubricant loss.
  • Engine oils using synthetic basestocks feature extended drain intervals, which means fewer oil changes and less waste.
  • Engine oils combining synthetic basestocks with special additives have been shown to deliver up to 2 percent fuel economy improvement. Since a reduction in gasoline consumption results in reduced carbon dioxide emissions, these synthetic engine oils may also have a positive impact on the environment.
